Welcome to Shearis HaPlate
Edible Leftovers, Inc - ELI - Feeding People for 30 Years
Hard to believe that 30 years ago, November 27th 1991, we began our quest that with a simple yet powerful idea.
Large quantities of perfectly edible food were being discarded (while too many people were unable to purchase basic needs).
Perhaps we could find a way to channel this to the less fortunate?
Shearis HaPlate
Started November 27, 1991, when we realized that tons of kosher food were being discarded while many people were in need of food.
We have, subsequently, started similar groups in Baltimore, Brooklyn, Lakewood, Nassau County, Passaic and Miami.
Since our onset we have picked up over 6,000 affairs, averaging about 250 each year.
Simchas Moshe
Bris Gemach
In early 2012, it was brought to our attention, that young families could not afford to make a basic Bris.
We bought all the paper goods wholesale and worked with a caterer to provide the standard foods that are served at a Bris.
This enables the new parents to make a Bris for approximately $5.00 per person.
Since we started this program we have subsidized more than 500 Brissim.
Simchas Sarah Leah
Cake Gemach.
In June 2011 we were approached by 15 special young ladies who waned to get involved in a chesed project.
They now meet every week to make cake platters to be distributed for Bar Mitzvos, Vorts, Shalom Zachors , Brissim and any other simcha.
We purchased refrigerators, freezers, a heat-sealing machine, fresh cake every week and thousands of gold leaf platters.
Since the outset we have distributed more than 20,000 platters at no charge to the recipients.

Yom-Tov Vouchers
In 1995, one of our devoted donors, asked
“How can our food recipients afford to buy food for Yom Tov”?
We decided to purchase food vouchers at a discount from a local store and to distribute them to our needy families
We are now distributing more than $50,000 before Pesach & Rosh Hashanah.
Simchas Moshe V'Chana
Bar Mitzvah G'mach
In 2017 a concerned neighbor came to us and described the plight of young families who had to make a Bar Mitzvah.
With all the expenses related to the Simcha there was limited funds available to make a respectable seuda.
After extensive discussions with a caterer, we were able to offer a fully catered Bar Mitzvahs for 100 people for $2,000 (We subsidize these affairs to make them affordable).
This cost includes waiters, china dishes, artificial flowers and a four-course dinner. We have made more than 100 since started this program

Bencher G'mach
In 1996 while collecting food at an event. We realized that hundreds of unused Benchers were left on the tables and were being discarded by the wait staff.
Not only was this a waste but it was desecration of holy books. We collected the Benchers and covered the names on the cover a new beautiful sticker.
We now have over 3,000 Benchers and small Mincha & Maariv booklets that we lend out to Bar Mitzvos, Sheva Brachos and other Simchos.
L'Chaim Schnapps G'mach
In 1997, a friend move to Israel and asked us if we could use his schnapps.
Rather than giving it out, we opened a gemach that enables people who are making simchos to borrow the schnapps and return the bottles at the conclusion the simcha.
We purchase new bottles to replenish the gemach is used about 100 times every year.
